After the bifurcation of the state, he joined the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in 2015 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Later, he returned to the Congress party. DS is survived by two sons, one of whom, Dharmapuri Arvind, is currently the BJP MP from Nizamabad, while the elder son, Sanjay, served as the Mayor of Nizamabad.

Born on September 27, 1948, DS completed his degree from Nizam College. He entered politics in 1989, contesting on a Congress ticket from Nizamabad Urban and winning the assembly seat. He was re-elected as an MLA in 1999 and 2004. DS held various ministerial positions, including Rural Development, I & PR, Higher Education, and Urban Land Ceiling. He played a crucial role during the Congress-Telangana Rashtra Samithi alliance in 2004, working closely with YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

DS had close ties with senior leaders like Pranab Mukherjee and was known for his loyalty to Sonia Gandhi. He maintained good relations with leaders like Jaipal Reddy, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy, Marri Chenna Reddy, and Nedurumalli Janardhana Reddy. From 2013 to 2015, DS served as a member of the Legislative Council and later as the leader of the opposition in the council post-Telangana formation.

After feeling sidelined in the Congress party, DS resigned and joined TRS in 2015. He served as the Advisor for Inter-State Affairs to the Telangana government and as a Rajya Sabha member from 2016 to 2022. Eventually, due to differences with TRS, he returned to the Congress party.
