PM Modi Extends Eid Al-Adha Greetings to Maldivian President Amid Strained Relations

New Delhi, June 17, 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his warm greetings to President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha. Despite the recent tensions between the two nations, the gesture underscores India’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties and fostering goodwill.

In a press release, the Indian High Commission in the Maldives conveyed the prime minister’s wishes to President Muizzu and the Maldivian people. The message, shared on the social media platform X, highlighted the significance of Eid Al-Adha and its core values.

“On the auspicious occasion of Eid Al-Adha, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India @NarendraModi extended warm greetings to His Excellency President of Maldives Dr. @MMuizzu, the Government & the people of the Republic of Maldives,” the Indian High Commission stated.

Prime Minister Modi’s message emphasized the values of sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood that Eid Al-Adha embodies. He noted that these values are crucial for building a peaceful and inclusive world. The prime minister also celebrated the festival’s place in India’s multicultural heritage, where it is observed with great enthusiasm and joy across the nation.

The exchange of greetings comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and the Maldives. Since President Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, assumed office in November last year, relations have been strained. One of Muizzu’s first demands was the complete withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, a move that further escalated tensions.

The situation worsened when three Maldivian ministers made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Modi following his visit to Lakshadweep, prompting a boycott of the Maldives by Indian tourists.

Despite these challenges, India has made efforts to extend an olive branch to the Maldivian leadership. President Muizzu was invited to attend Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, and Union Minister S. Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with him in New Delhi. Following the meeting, Jaishankar expressed optimism about the future of India-Maldives relations.

“Delighted to call on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of Maldives today in New Delhi. Look forward to India and Maldives working together closely,” Jaishankar said on X.

As both nations navigate these complex diplomatic waters, Prime Minister Modi’s Eid Al-Adha greetings serve as a reminder of the enduring cultural and historical ties between India and the Maldives. The emphasis on shared values and mutual respect highlights the potential for reconciliation and collaboration, even in challenging times.

The outreach by PM Modi, through his Eid message emphasizing universal values of sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood, reflects India’s effort to mend strained ties and promote peaceful coexistence with the Maldives. The continuation of diplomatic engagement, despite tensions, showcases India’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening regional partnerships.
