The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of the most awaited festivals in Odisha, is set to mesmerize devotees today with its grand celebrations. This annual event, marking the return of Lord Jagannath, Subhadra, and Balabhadra to the Shri Kshetra Puri, is a vibrant and profoundly spiritual occasion for millions.
Historical and Spiritual Significance
The Rath Yatra holds immense religious significance as it is the only time the deities leave the sanctum sanctorum of the Jagannath Temple and are taken on a grand procession to the Gundicha Temple. This return journey, known as Bahuda Yatra, sees the deities adorned in magnificent attire and placed on beautifully decorated chariots.
A Sea of Devotees
Millions of devotees throng the city of Puri to witness this divine spectacle every year. The streets are filled with genuine devotees eager to pull the giant chariots, chant hymns, and sing praises of Lord Jagannath. The 12-day festival, which commenced on July 7, transforms Puri into a vibrant hub of spiritual activity.
Unique Rituals and Traditions
Unlike other Hindu temples, where only ceremonial idols are taken out in processions, the Jagannath Temple sees the participation of the principal deities in the Rath Yatra. This unique tradition makes the festival exceptionally sacred for devotees. The chariots themselves are a marvel, with Lord Jagannath’s chariot named ‘Nandighosha,’ Lord Balabhadra’s chariot called ‘Taladhwaja,’ and Goddess Subhadra’s chariot known as ‘Padmadhwaja.’
Grand Celebrations
On the auspicious day of Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, the deities are adorned with exquisite gold jewelry, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. The festival culminates on Dwadasi when the deities are reinstalled on their throne, marking the end of the grand Yatra.
