New Delhi: In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties and promoting sustainable development, billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani met with the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dasho Tshering Tobgay, and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Sunday. During his visit to Thimphu, Mr. Adani announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a 570 MW green hydro plant in Chukha province.
The Chairman of Adani Group shared his enthusiasm and admiration for Bhutan’s visionary leadership on social media. “Absolutely fascinating meeting with Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Hon. Prime Minister of Bhutan. Signed an MoU with DGPC for a 570 MW green hydro plant in Chukha province. Admirable to see @pmo_bhutan advancing the vision of His Majesty The King and pursuing broad-ranging infrastructure initiatives across the kingdom. Looking forward to working closely on hydro & other infra in Bhutan,” Mr. Adani said.
Mr. Adani’s meeting with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was particularly noteworthy. He expressed his honor and inspiration drawn from the King’s vision for Bhutan’s future. “Honoured to meet His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan. Inspired by his vision for Bhutan and the ambitious eco-friendly masterplan for Gelephu Mindfulness City, including large computing centers and data facilities. Excited to collaborate on these transformative initiatives as also on green energy management for a carbon-negative nation!” he posted on Instagram.
The eco-friendly masterplan for Gelephu Mindfulness City, which includes plans for large computing centers and data facilities, showcases Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable development and technological advancement. The collaboration between Adani Group and Bhutan on green energy projects is expected to further the kingdom’s goal of becoming a carbon-negative nation.
This isn’t the first time Mr. Adani has expressed interest in Bhutan’s development. In November last year, he met with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and highlighted the potential for the Adani Group to contribute to green infrastructure development in Bhutan, describing the nation as “one of our happy and warm neighbors.”
The newly signed MoU with DGPC (Druk Green Power Corporation) marks a significant milestone in the relationship between Adani Group and Bhutan. The 570 MW green hydro plant in Chukha province is poised to enhance Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity and contribute to its sustainable development goals.
As Bhutan continues to advance its infrastructure and green energy initiatives, the collaboration with Adani Group is expected to bring significant benefits, fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability in the region.
