Live news updates: Yashwant Sinha, a former minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government, was on Tuesday named the Opposition’s presidential candidate in election next month.
“In the forthcoming Presidential elections, we have decided to elect a common candidate and stop the Modi government from doing further damage. At a subsequent meeting held today we have chosen Yashwant Sinha as a common candidate. We appeal to all political parties to vote for Yashwant Sinha,” said Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s communication chief.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra — a coalition comprising the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress — is on the brink crisis, with at least one-and-a-half dozen Sena MLAs indicating unhappiness with the government and having shifted to a luxury hotel in Gujarat’s Surat district, according to MVA sources. The MLAs are led by senior Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra urban development minister, Eknath Shinde, who according to sources, has been disgruntled with the government because he felt sidelined, multiple reports said.
Elections to 10 legislative council seats in the state were held Monday, in which the BJP, with 106 MLAs in the assembly, received a total of 134 votes for its five candidates, by securing votes from independent members, smaller parties, as well as some votes from the MVA camp.
Shinde has reportedly moved to Meridian hotel in Surat in BJP-ruled Gujarat with 21 other MLAs.
