Cricket star Virat Kohli and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma have announced the birth of their daughter with the cricket world sharing its support for the superstar couple.

Kohli did play the white-ball games and the first Test in the current Indian series against Australia but locked in paternity leave, missing the final three Tests of the summer in order to be present at the birth of his daughter.

While hopeful cricket fans held out hope the cricket star would be able to return, it was never really on the cards with his daughter born on Monday afternoon.

The brand new dad took to Instagram to share his family’s joy.

“We are thrilled to share with you that we have been blessed with a baby girl this afternoon,” he wrote in a message across his social media channels.

“We thank you all for your love, prayers and good wishes. Anushka and the baby are both healthy and we are feeling beyond blessed to start this new chapter of our lives. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Love Virat.”

Indian teammate Hardik Pandya was quick to reply.

“Congratulations brother and @anushkasharma. Welcome to parenthood. A big hug to the little one, who’ll give you happiness like you’ve never experienced before,” he wrote on Instagram.

Aussie star David Warner also posted “Awesome news, congrats buddy. DM me for some tips”.

Within an hour of the post, more than 2 million fans had already liked the post on Instagram.

The family has not released a name as yet or a picture of the child but they will be hotly anticipated with fans already putting name ideas out.

But fans hoping the child will grow up in the public eye have already been rebuffed by Sharma, who spoke to Vogue India about their child.

“We’ve thought about it a lot. We definitely do not want to raise a child in the public eye — we don’t plan on engaging our child in social media. I think it’s a decision your child should be able to take. No kid should be made to be more special than the other. It’s hard enough for adults to deal with.”

Who can blame the new parents though after Sharma was blamed by some fans over India’s loss in the first Test between Australia and India.
