Bystanders have been praised for helping a man who had a tree branch fall on him at Cataract Dam, near Wollongong.

Paramedics and a Toll Rescue NSW Ambulance Helicopter attended the dam just after 1.45pm on Sunday after the tree branch had fallen on the man.

The 65-year-old suffered a head injury and went into traumatic cardiac arrest.

He was flown to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Norman Rees said bystanders did “an incredible job” to help the man until emergency services arrived.

“It was a very chaotic scene with a number of families enjoying picnics in the sunshine when the freak incident happened,” he said.

“Accidents like this are absolutely tragic, especially during the holiday season when we are out and about spending time with our loved ones.”
