Favourable growing conditions and steady rainfall has caused fruit prices to plummet, with Australian cherry, strawberry and grape growers delivering their “best summer harvest in many years”.

Cherries, an Aussie Christmas go-to, are 10 per cent cheaper than last year (from $11.90/kg) and according to growers are some of the “tastiest in recent years”.

Grapes have been the best fresh fruit deal this Christmas, with prices about 25 per cent lower than last year.

Woolworths general manager of fruit and vegetables Paul Turner recommended Aussies buy in-season fruit and vegetables to get the best value.

“With some of the most popular Christmas favourites like strawberries, cherries and grapes in abundance, we’re offering customers great value on these lines,” he said.

“All of our Christmas cherries, grapes and strawberries are Australian grown, supporting local farmers who have delivered a sensational harvest for Australian families to enjoy.”

NSW cherry grower and president of the industry’s association Tom Eastlake said there had never been a better summer for Australians to eat cherries.

“Supply is great and the quality is perhaps the best it has ever been – we think this season has likely delivered some of the best cherries you’ll ever eat,” he said.

“I think growers all around Australia are overjoyed they’ve been able to harvest such high quality cherries to help Aussies celebrate Christmas and enjoy their summer.”

Classic Christmas essentials such as “reindeer” carrots are now on special at Woolworths at $1 per kilogram, with 10 cents from every sale going to WIRES Wildlife Rescue.

Woolworths has also dropped prices on more than 140 products, including Christmas favourites like prawns, whole chickens, fruit cake and mince pies.
