The body of a 16-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming at a popular Perth beach has been recovered.

Less than two days after Matiyas Bekuretsion went missing after swimming at Scarborough Beach, a member of the public located “human remains” at a beach in Trigg.

WA Police confirmed they had forensically examined the remains, and they were those of Matiyas.

Matiyas was swimming with three other teenagers at Scarborough Beach just after 8pm on Monday when they “got into difficulties”.

While three of them made it to shore with the help of a bystander, Matiyas did not make it out of the water, prompting an extensive air and sea search and rescue operation.

It was earlier reported Matiyas was an “inexperienced swimmer”.

WA Police confirmed on Friday they had concluded the search, after human remains had been found at 8.30am on Wednesday morning.

Earlier this week, his uncle and Pastor Tesfaye Mebratu told NCA NewsWire the family were praying his body would be recovered so they could lay him to rest.

Matiyas had moved to Perth almost three years ago to live with relatives, leaving his mother behind in Ethiopia.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
