Queensland is stepping up its hotel quarantine defences to minimise the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak like Victoria and South Australia.

The state recorded three new cases in the last testing period, all detected in hotel quarantine.

There are 12 active cases in Queensland, all international arrivals, however more than 7000 people were tested for the second day in a row on Wednesday.

“That shows our message is getting across to the community,” Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said.

She said the majority of Queensland residents or visitors who had been in Adelaide in the past 14 days had tested negative.

Queensland already has “one of the strongest hotel quarantine systems in the country”; however, Ms D’Ath announced new requirements for those working in facilities across the state.

“What we do here as a matter of practice is when someone tests positive, we move them into hospital … We believe this has strengthened our quarantine response,” she said.

“We will from early next week, start testing our staff in hotel quarantine on a weekly basis.

“That’s our police and health workers who come into contact with those who test positive in hotel quarantine … We want to make sure they’re tested regularly to further strengthen our response.”

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said as the global caseload climbed to more than 56 million cases, Queensland should expect to see more cases in hotel quarantine.

She also told Queenslanders to ensure they had appropriate face masks in case a similar situation to that of South Australia broke out in the Sunshine State.

“We should be prepared to use them,” she said.
