Singer-songwriter Jewel is celebrating 25 years since her debut album Pieces of You was released.

And in a candid interview with Lisa Wilkinson on The Sunday Project tonight, she’s sharing what was really going on behind the scenes of the iconic album,

Jewel was only twenty years old and was living out of her car in 1995, when she released one of the best selling debut albums of all time.

In the interview, the singer opened up about her tough childhood and how she ended up homeless before becoming an overnight success.

“I ended up homeless because I would have sex with a boss and he wouldn’t give me my pay cheque and I couldn’t pay my rent month,” Jewel said in the interview.

“I started living in my car, I didn’t think it would last long but my car ended up getting stolen.”

The singer also went into detail about her secret relationship with actor Sean Penn in the mid 90s, which was only revealed in her autobiography Never Broken in 2015.

“We dated before I was successful and he really believed in me,” she said.

“I think he is misunderstood and he’s so intelligent and he just believed in me in a way that nobody had.

“I never wanted to be known for that (relationship). I remember going to the Venice Film Festival and I never let myself have photographs with him. I was not the kind of girl that was going to get known for dating somebody.

“That’s not how I’m wired — I’d rather not be famous for that so I really just felt like it wasn’t a relevant thing to talk about. I wasn’t desperate to get in the media.”

In the interview, Jewel also discussed how she got to share a stage with none other than Beyonce herself.

“She kept dumbing down the choreography so my little white butt could get it,” she said.

“I mean she was so kind and then I think I was having an out of body experience during the performance I forgot several chunks of choreography I didn’t even know it, but she watched me and just did what I did.

“How nice is that? Most girls would take that as an opportunity to be like ‘I’m looking amazing over here’, but she was a sister she really took care of me”.

Jewel’s entire interview with Lisa Wilkinson is on The Sunday Project tonight at 6:30pm on Channel 10.
