Two jet riders have narrowly escaped serious injury after they struck a bridge pylon while trying to avoid being pelted with rocks thrown by a group of teens.

The 17-year-olds were travelling on a jet ski along Cornmeal Creek at Maroochydore when about half a dozen teens gathered on Duporth Ave Bridge and started hurling large rocks, police say.

The startled jet riders were forced to take evasive action and swerved, resulting in them colliding with one of the bridge pylons on Friday.

It was one of four incidents involving jet skis in a 24 hour period after three people were injured in separate riding accidents on Saturday.

A teenage boy sustained muscular skeletal injuries following a jet ski mishap at Somerset Dam on Saturday morning while a man his 60s was injured in an accident at Southport and a teenager required the attention of paramedics at Carrara after coming off a jet ski.

The two jet ski riders on Friday were thrown into the creek at Maroochydore upon impact, while the $8000 jet ski was a write-off.

The driver of the recreational water vessel sustained a wrist injury and was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Sunshine Coast Water Police Senior Constable Murray Lyons said the matter could have resulted in serious injury or even death.

“We would appeal for anyone who may have been in the vicinity around Cotton Tree or Ocean Street at the time of the incident and may have seen the group involved to come forward,” Senior Constable Lyons said.

“Police take matters such as this extremely seriously.”

Early investigations indicate as many six teenagers, mostly boys but possibly one girl, were involved.

Three people in the group were on bicycles and seen fleeing the area towards Ocean Street.

One of the boys was wearing a black shirt with red shorts and carrying a black backpack.
