Sergio Aguero escaped punishment for making contact with lineswoman Sian Massey-Ellis in Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday (AEDT).

The Manchester City striker, who returned to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, started up-front for Pep Guardiola’s side, and sparked outrage online after an uncomfortable moment with the official.

Aguero and City teammate Riyad Mahrez were closing down Arsenal defender Gabriel in the far corner of the field, before the Brazilian centre-half cleared the ball off the City striker, and into touch.

Massey-Ellis awarded Arsenal the throw-in, and Aguero, who was right in front of the assistant referee, was aggressive in his protest.

Ignoring Aguero’s protestation, Massey-Ellis began to walk up the sideline, before the Argentinian put his left hand around the back of the official’s neck.

Fortunately for Aguero, Massey-Ellis was happy to get on with it.

But those watching from home weren’t as forgiving.

“Well that was not okay… Aguero wtf,” New Zealand international Rosie White tweeted.

“This not cool,” The Athletic’s James McNicholas said.

While ITV’s Piers Morgan added: “Erm, what is Aguero doing here? And why wasn’t he sent off for it?”

“‘Get your hands off her’ is my absolute first reaction to this,” ITV’s Beth Fisher said.

Guardiola was quick to pour cold water on the situation.

“Come on guys,” he said.

“Sergio is the nicest person I have ever met in my life. Look for problems in other situations, not in this one.”

Raheem Sterling’s strike midway through the first-half was enough to relaunch City’s title challenge after failing to win two of their first three league games of the new season.
