Talented three-year old Extra Time could be headed back to Melbourne after an impressive win in the $100,000 Rebel Raider Series Final at Morphettville on Saturday.

Co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas had considered a spell for the gelding, but the manner of his victory could prompt a rethink and an extension to his campaign.

Asked what the future plans were for Extra Time, Macdonald responded: “We are not sure what we are going to do”.

“We were thinking paddock, but who knows. We could go back to Victoria, there are a lot of options during the Flemington carnival.

“The horse raced well in Melbourne, apart from one run. We had to run him last week to qualify him for this race and he had a lot of weight with 62.5kg.

“It was important (jockey) Jason (Holder) rode him last week to get a feel of him. We were pleased with the run (when third), he was strong at the 1100m and the 1200m was obviously going to suit him better.”

Extra Time was a Group 3 winner over 1200m at Morphettville at his previous preparation and he went to the barrier at healthy each way odds.

Holder gave him every possible chance, settling just behind the leaders, before taking control of the race with a powerful finishing burst.

“He never looked like being beaten,” Macdonald said.

The Difference, trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, could also be given an opportunity in Melbourne after winning over 1200m with Jessica Eaton in the saddle.

With Tony in Sydney for Dollar For Dollar’s run in The Everest, and Calvin handling the spring team in Victoria, stable foreperson Finn McCarthy was in charge at Morphettville and he said the stable had always had a high opinion of the five-year old.

McCarthy said The Difference had had plenty of issues, particularly with his feet, but the “guys” were doing a great job to have him “flying”.

“The stable has always thought an awful lot of him, but it has taken a while for him to get going,” McCarthy said. “We have to take care of him quite a bit, but are keeping on top of it.

“Hopefully we can find a race for him in Melbourne at some stage.”
