After a couple of ‘soft’ opening rounds of the 2020 SuperCoach Racing season this week is going to test even the best judges of horse flesh.

Both of this round’s Group 1 races come at a steep entry price and the Caulfield Cup in particular profiles as a tough race.

However, there’s still value to be found so let’s get cracking reviewing the field for Round Three and see which rate the best in my metric.

It’s not too late to play the game: register and start picking your SuperCoach Stable now!

For those who are new to this column, each week I rank the leading contenders that offer a, hopefully, winning blend of popularity in the betting market and cheap SuperCoach price.

To compare apples with apples I have added a weighting to reflect the different points on offer for Group 1, 2, 3 and non black type races.

Below I list the top-40 horses (expanded list this week due to expensive Group 1 races), run through the stable I have selected and then throw in a bit of bonus analysis on the jockeys too.

It’s Me has an outstanding rating in the metric, I expect the undefeated Kosciuszko favourite to be the most popular pick of the round and I’ll be running with the herd.

The Group 1 runners are expensive (see below) but Alfa Oro provides a really nice way into the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint. The Matt Laurie trained gelding has won his past five runs and while this is a step up in class he’s very tight in the market. Jumping ahead on my list a little I have taken another Caulfield Sprint runner in Garner this round. The South Australian speedster has a great strike rate, loves it wet and there are just eight horses entered in the race so I like his chances.

Speaking of big points, Rainbiel is not racing for them, but the hot favourite in the Fillies Plate is a cheap way into points and a win would provide a nice boost to stable value – something to factor in as we get into the expensive end of the game.

Starelle is another $100K runner and the G3 Ethereal favourite was just pipped by Thermosphere in the G2 Edward Manifold at her last start.

A couple of cheapies up next in Scream Dream and Only Mine. Scream Dream finished behind only Rainbiel (by 2.75 lengths admittedly) at her last start and despite being a $50K runner I’ll start her and leave Only Mine as my emergency.

Now we get to the Group 1 runners of which I have managed to squeeze four under the Sutherland salary sombrero.

My two Everest runners are Classique Legend and Gytrash. Classique Legend has not won at G1 level, but it’s hard to fault his recent form, he’s drawn well and – vital for SuperCoach – he’s a snip at just $375K. Gytrash is my most expensive horse, and despite the Gordon Richards trained sprinter sitting third in betting I am leaning towards throwing the captaincy the ultra-consistent (20 starts for 9 wins and 10 places) speedster.

The Caulfield Cup is as tough as ever but I’m a sucker for Group 1 points so have managed to fit two runners under my cap. I struggled to split Master of Wine and Finche and even had both in an earlier iteration of my stable, but when I saw I could use $100K elsewhere one had to go. In the end I stuck with my Metric – and a love of wine.

With $275K to spend, and a sweet tooth, Toffee Tongue profiles perfectly for me. The Waller mare surprised many when she rattled home to finish second in the Turnbull at 70/1. Now horses who run a big race at big odds do not have a superb record when it comes to backing it up but she’s a G1 winner who drops 2.5kg on the Turnbull and I’ll take the chance at the price.

AND NOW TO JOCKEYS

Jockey Rides Under $5 Under $10
T Berry 9 1 3
J Collett 8 2 5
J McDonald 8 6 7
K McEvoy 9 5 6
C Williams 9 2 5

JMac his usual stacked book of sub-$5 rides while Jason Collett, whose book includes It’s Me and Gytrash is a trendy tip. If I’m to go away from McDonald it will probably be for Kerrin McEvoy. McEvoy has a good record on Everest day and a solid line up of sub-$5 rides.
