The Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes tests three-year olds over the Randwick 2000m – often for the first time.

The fresh distance query is a worry, but the chance to grab a piece of maximum points for a minimal price makes the race one you should invest in.

These are our five favoured picks in the race:

LOVE TAP

SuperCoach price: $125,000

The grey gelding has done nothing but win in his four starts to date. Impressive last start when he led all the way to win the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill. Available for $100K less than the horse he leads in betting, Love Tap will be a very popular pick in Round 2.

MONTEFILIA

SuperCoach price: $225,000

The David Payne trained filly was installed as second favourite for the race after a tough win in which she came from last at the turn to claim the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last weekend. That win saw her price climb $50K – good for Round 1 owners but not great for those considering her here.

BUCHAREST

SuperCoach price: $100,000

Having the fifth run of his prep, the beautifully bred Waller colt is another coming into the race via the Gloaming – in which he finished a fast finishing third behind Love Tap. Hard to dislike at the price.

CHERRY TORTONI

SuperCoach price: $175,000

Was originally set for the Caulfield Guineas but the wet Melbourne forecast has trainer Patrick Payne looking north. Won over 1600m last prep and then finished second to Glenfiddich over the distance in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes last start. Only query is that I can get other well credentialed-horses for less money.

CHOIR

SuperCoach price: $125,000

Unlike many of his competitors here, Choir has run – and won – over the 2000m (albeit a maiden at Moe). Had a brief spell after that Moe run and came back from the rest looking good finishing third over 1800m at Flemington.

OTHERS:

LION’S ROAR – Lacks the black type polish of others in the race, but comes into this off the back of wins over 1600m and 1870m. A $100K cheapie worth consideration.

FAVREAU – Kiwi gelding trained by John Sargeant at Randwick. Ran fourth in the Gloaming and could be a cheap option into the race.
