At long last, we finally know who will play the starring role in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
UK actor Paddy Considine has been cast as the HBO fantasy series lead, King Viserys Targaryen.
The news was announced today on the official GoT Twitter account.
But he has been acting for more than two decades, rising to prominence in the early 2000s in a series of popular independent films including A Room for Romeo Brass (1990) and Dead Man’s Shoes (2004).
He has previously been described as the “best-kept secret in British movies”.
House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the events of GoT, and will focus on the rise and fall of House Targaryen.
In a new statement, HBO gave a brief character detail of Viserys.
“Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”
There is intense interest in the prequel given the immense popularity of Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons all of which are streaming on Binge.
House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire & Blood, which was written by GoT author George R.R. Martin who co-created the show alongside Ryan Condal, who also serves as showrunner on the series.
It’s reported the show will focus on the Dance of the Dragons – which is the Targaryen civil war of succession between Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra over their father Viserys’s throne.
It will be exclusive to Foxtel and Binge in Australia when it airs in 2022.

The pilot and several other episodes will be shot by veteran GoT muse Miguel Sapochnik, who directed some of the most epic episodes in the show’s history including ‘Battle of the B*stards’, ‘Hardhome’ and ‘The Long Night’.
News of this new prequel will be particularly exciting for fans, given it’s not too far removed from our beloved GoT characters.
Game of Thrones touched on the fascinating history of House Targaryen, but by the end of the show, which aired its eighth and final season in May last year, it had almost died out.
