Taylor Walker has joined Daniel Talia on the Adelaide sidelines with an ankle injury as Carlton recall Eddie Betts to take on his former club.

Walker has been battling the knock in the wake of the Crows second win of the season over GWS and the former captain was not able to prove his fitness for the clash against the Blues on the Gold Coast.

Talia had already been ruled out of the clash, with the club saying the important key defender is being managed, and the two veterans are part of four changes by the Crows.

Bryce Gibbs comes in for the final game of his career against his old club, after announcing his retirement on Thursday, while Billy Frampton replaces Walker to play for the first time since Round 6.

Young key defender Jordon Butts will replace Talia in the Crows backline and forward Tom Lynch also returns.

David Mackay misses through suspension after his hit on GWS’ Matt de Boer, while young forward Lachlan Murphy has been dropped.

After six seasons at West Lakes Betts will take on the Crows for the first time as he returns to the Carlton line-up.

Jack Martin misses through injury and while he kicked the goal that won the Blues Tuesday night’s match against Sydney Matthew Cottrell has been dropped.

Matt Owies is the final omission by Carlton, who along with Betts call-up Michael Gibbons and Lochie O’Brien – selected by the Blues with one of the picks Adelaide gave up for Gibbs – for the clash.

STAR PIES BOOST FLAG TILT

Collingwood will be significantly boosted on Monday night with stars Jordan De Goey and Adam Treloar to return against Gold Coast.

The pair will both train with the selected side on Saturday evening on the Sunshine Coast before lining up against the Suns at the Gabba on Monday.

“They’ll have a run around this evening at match time,” Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said on Saturday.

“We’ll have our VFL squad have a hitout with Gold Coast this afternoon so we’re pretty much only having our selected side having a run around this evening.

“And both Jordie and Adam will be in that mix or with that group and playing on Monday.”

Buckley said De Goey – who has not played since kicking five goals against Geelong in Round 7 with a finger injury – was right to go.

“We understand there’s a little bit of a risk with re-injury, but the surgeon was happy for him to get back to contact work and playing,” he said.

“He’s done a fair bit of touch over the past couple of weeks, so getting that hit out earlier this week was the final step.

“There were no concerns so he’s ready to go.”

Midfielder Brayden Sier (quad) remains a “week or two away” from a return.

Star Steele Sidebottom is still in Melbourne awaiting the birth of his first child, but the Magpies remain hopeful he’ll return this season.

FATHER-SON HAWK TO DEBUT

— Simeon Thomas-Wilson

Finn Maginness will follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather when he debuts for Hawthorn against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.

The Hawks have revealed the 19-year-old father-son will make his debut for the club at Adelaide Oval, after Hawthorn fans clamoured for his selection in recent weeks.

A father-son recruit with his father Scott playing 131 games for the Hawks, including the 1988 and 1989 premierships, Maginness’ grandfather Norm played 64 games for Hawthorn during the 1950s.

The third-generation Hawk said he could not wait to walk in their footsteps.

“It’s a bond that I’ll have with my dad and grandpa forever, given that we’ve all played for the club, we’ve all pulled on the guernsey,” he said.

“To be able to say I’m a third generation Hawk is really awesome and it’s something my family is really proud of.”

Maginness is a big-bodied midfielder who loves the contest, and his inclusion will be a bright spark for Hawks fans in a dismal year for the powerhouse club.

“I’m an in and under sort of player, so getting the contested footy, handballing it out, tackling and then probably my running ability – working up and down the ground – is one of my strengths,” he said.

Vice-captain Jaeger O’Meara is back for the Hawks after four games out because of hand surgery, and after signing a new deal to play on in 2021, veteran Shaun Burgoyne is also in.

Ruckman Ben McEvoy is Hawthorn’s other inclusion.

James Worpel is out for the rest of the season after injuring his AC joint while Dan Howe, Josh Morris and Changkuoth Jiath have been omitted.

Out of contract captain Ben Stratton again misses for the Hawks.

The Bulldogs have included Matt Suckling and Taylor Duryea to face their former club at the expense of Will Hayes and Sam Lloyd.

CONIGLIO AXED IN GIANT SELECTION SHOCK

Greater Western Sydney has swung eight changes for its must-win clash with Melbourne on Saturday, dropping five players including captain Stephen Coniglio.

Ruck recruit Sam Jacobs and youngsters Lachie Ash, Jackson Hately and Jye Caldwell have also been dumped, while forward sensation Jake Riccardi has been managed.

Stars Josh Kelly and Zac Williams headline the ins for the Giants after recovering from separate injury concerns and Jack Buckley will make his debut.

The Demons have made three changes of their own, dropping big man Braydon Preuss and Toby Bedford while experienced defender Michael Hibberd is out with injury, making way for Neville Jetta, Mitch Brown and Charlie Spargo.

It means key forward Tom McDonald, named as emergency, remains on the outer.

Joe Daniher returns for Essendon’s match-up with Port Adelaide after missing last round but skipper Dyson Heppell and Michael Hurley will miss through injury.

CAPTAIN AXING A ‘BUMP IN ROAD’

GWS football boss Jason McCartney says the dropping of captain Stephen Coniglio is a “bump in the road” for the first-year skipper.

Coniglio is reportedly the first AFL captain in 22 years to be dropped.

The GWS leader won’t play against Melbourne on Saturday after a horror form slump.

“Stephen is the first to admit that his form hasn’t been where he’d like it to be,” Giants football boss Jason McCartney said.

“We see this as a speed bump in the road. He’s a quality man and he’ll bounce back.

“It’s a sign of a strong football club that if people don’t perform at all levels, you need to have hard conversations.

“He’s an A-grade footballer, he’s an A-grade person and we’ll support him and he’ll bounce back.

“Our focus now goes onto Saturday night and Melbourne and how we can beat them.”

No stand-in captain has been named.
