The Japanese star qualified for the decider in front of rapper boyfriend Cordae, who was watching on from the stands and drew plenty of attention as the camera regularly focused on him throughout the dramatic three-setter.
Sports writer Clinton yates tweeted: “OH CORDAE IS IN THE BUILDING?! LOOK AT THIS BLACK LOVE.”
Tennis writer Nikhila Makker said it was “nice” to see while comedian Rae Sanni called it “so sweet”.
The tennis world was captivated by the quality of the semi-final that saw Brady throw everything at Osaka, only to fall short of making her first ever major final as the pair combined for 70 winners and 19 aces.
New York Times tennis writer Ben Rothenberg said the match was of “unreal quality” while Aussie coach and ESPN commentator Darren Cahill said it was possibly the best women’s match of the year.
The Guardian’s Tumaini Carayol called the contest “such a high quality match” while UK tennis reporter George Bellshaw was in awe of the “ridiculously good” semi-final.
“It means a lot for me. I kind of consider New York my second home,” Osaka said afterwards.
“I love the atmosphere, even though there’s no people here. This court really suits me well.”
The world No. 9 will face either Serena Williams of Victoria Azarenka in the final.
