A taxi driver has allegedly been punched and threatened with a garden stake during an attempted carjacking in Melbourne’s west overnight.
The driver told police a dispute over the fare started the confrontation in Truganina before it quickly escalated just after 9pm on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old driver earlier picked up three teenagers, who all sat in the back seat, and drove them to Mayfield Ave, Truganina where the dispute started.
One of the teens then used the driver’s phone and refused to give it back before the cabbie and the trio got out of the car.
The driver was then allegedly punched and threatened with a garden stake for the keys to the taxi.
But the teens were unsuccessful in trying to start the car and had to run from the scene.
Two of the teenagers, a 17-year-old and a Tarneit man, 18, were arrested about 30 minutes later when police were called to reports of suspicious activity.
The other teenager, aged 16, was also arrested by detectives shortly after in Mayfield Ave.
Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said the trio were expected to be charged with attempted carjacking, theft and assault.
