You think you know Jimmy Barnes.

He may be frozen in your memory as the screaming rocker demolishing stages and eardrums with his gravelly exorcism of Cold Chisel classics.

Perhaps the Jimmy who springs to mind is the record-breaking solo artist, the architect of Australian anthems like Working Class Man and interpreter of soul standards like Chain Of Fools, the songs which have soundtracked backyard BBQs, family gatherings and sporting broadcasts for more than three decades.

Yet the rocker revealed he had plenty of reasons to scream when he put his storytelling skills to writing his gritty, raw and often painful memoirs. Working Class Boy, illuminated the profound, lifelong effects of childhood abuse and poverty on James Dixon Swan after his family immigrated to Australia from Scotland in 1962 in search of a better life.

Its sequel Working Class Man chronicled his self-destructive path as he sought to escape the trauma of his youth by running away to the rock’n’roll circus.

And now he completes the trilogy with Killing Time: short stories from the long road home. And you discover there are still so many things you didn’t know about Jimmy Barnes.

The rocker brings those stories to life – and shares some unexpected encounters with characters from so many different worlds outside of music – in his first-ever podcast Story Time with Jimmy Barnes.
