American actress Niecy Nash has taken the internet by surprise by revealing she recently wed singer Jessica Betts.
The pair’s relationship was not previously public knowledge – and Nash had only finalised her divorce from ex-husband Jay Tucker in March. The former couple, who had been married since 2011, jointly announced their separation in October, saying they were “better friends than partners in marriage”.
In a surprising twist, Betts had previously appeared in an episode of Nash’s TV series Claws in which her character got married – with Betts playing her wedding singer:
Emmy-nominated actress Nash, 50, dubbed the wedding a “plot twist” in a social media post showing her gazing contentedly at her new wife:
While the couple hadn’t spoken publicly about their relationship before their surprise wedding, they have frequently appeared on each other’s social media accounts for some time.
“When you get to hang out on set with your homegirl,” Nash said in a short video of the pair posted in October last year.
And Betts marked Nash’s birthday back in February – by posting a topless photo of her:
The couple’s celeb friends have today flooded their wedding photos with messages of support.
“YASSSSSS! Bless this beautiful union!” wrote Halle Berry.
“Congratulations Niecy! Now this how you keep yo f’ing business to yourself! PERIOD! May you both have a life filled with love and blessings in abundance,” wrote actress Tami Roman.
“Congratulations! So happy for y’all!” said actress Reese Witherspoon.
Nash was previously married for 13 years to Don Nash, an ordained minister, before filing for divorce in June 2007. They have three children together. She and Tucker wed four years later.
Nash had spoken publicly about seeking happiness after the “pain” of her divorce in a speech at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards in February.
“The untethering from my family’s beliefs, the internet’s expectations and my marriage ending caused me so much pain … I’m about to take my 50th trip around the sun. I am the most grateful because I know myself better and more fully than I ever have before. I let my daughters watch me work through the whole (divorce), because for them, I want them to get up every single day and choose themselves,” she said.
