A man has been shot dead in a southwest Sydney street in an incident police say appears to be targeted.

Emergency services arrived at the scene on Wall Ave, Panania just before midnight on Saturday after residents reported hearing multiple gun shots.

They found a man, believed to be 39 years old, suffering from several gunshot wounds.

NSW Paramedics performed CPR at the scene but he was unable to be revived.

The man has not been formerly identified.

Bankstown police have established an investigation into the incident and say initial inquiries suggest the shooting was targeted.
