Jorge Masvidal came through a rough camp on short notice to successfully make weight ahead of his welterweight clash with Kamaru Usman at UFC 251 on Sunday.
The MMA promotion’s first event on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi will be headlined by the Usman-Masvidal clash, while Aussie Alexander Volkanovski defends his featherweight strap in a rematch against Max Holloway in the co-main event.

Also on the card is Petr Yan’s fight against Jose Aldo for the vacant bantamweight title.
Masvidal accepted an invitation a week ago to fight Usman after Gilbert Burns tested positive for coronavirus and told reporters he dropped 9kg in six days.
The 35-year-old stripped naked before stepping on the scales, covered only by a towel as he came in at 170 pounds (77kg).

“Twenty pounds (9kg) in six days,” Masvidal said when asked how tough it was for him to make weight. “That’s all I’m gonna say. It was rough. But I did it. I get s**t done.
“I’m hurting though, initially during the weight cut, but now it’s all behind me. I made the weight, I’ve already got liquids in me, food in me, so pretty soon it’ll be just party time.”
Masvidal posted a photo to Instagram before the weigh-in showing the drastic lengths he was taking to shed the excess kilos, covering himself completely in towels.
Flyweight Paige VanZant faces Amanda Ribas in what may be her last fight in the UFC as she reaches a crossroads in her MMA career.
The American will explore free agency after the bout in an effort to secure a more lucrative contract after feeling like she’s been undervalued.
“I want to prove my worth and my value and I want a brand new contract,” she told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani last month.
“I’m really excited to get that opportunity and really test free agency because how do you know what your value is, unless you can go test it among all the other sharks?
“This fight matters to me more than any fight in my entire career, so I’m putting it all out there.”
