A suspect is dead and least five people, including two police officers, have reportedly been injured following a shooting in New York on Tuesday evening.
Local media reports the incident occurred just after 9pm in Brooklyn at the Kingsborough Houses at Rochester Ave and Dean Street.
Police said a suspect is believed to have shot multiple people at a housing complex before being shot and killed by responding officers, ABC7 reported.
It has been reported at least three people have been taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries. Two NYPD officers have also been taken to hospital with minor injuries.
NYPD Chief Terence Monahan said the incident was not related to the ongoing protests occurring in other parts of the city.
When police arrived on the scene they discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound.
“The officers then encountered a male who was hiding behind a tree,” Monahan said.
The man was armed the officers reportedly gave orders for him to drop the weapon for over a minute.
“The male refused the orders and the officers discharged their weapons at the individual and struck him,” Monahan said.
A nearby resident, who identified himself only as Champ, told the New York Post that he saw police helping a man who had been shot in the leg.
“Then I got the hell out of dodge,” he said.
Champ told the publication that there was no protests in the area leading up to the shooting and that the incident was “totally isolated”.
