While running errands, actress Nimrat Kaur came across a house with Irrfan’s mural drawn on its wall. Incientally, this house is located near the house where Irrfan’s The Lunchbox character, Saajan Fernandes, lived.
Irrfan and Nimrat played the lead roles in The Lunchbox. Remembering her co-star, Nimrat wrote, “Chanced upon this arresting mural in Ranwar Village on an errand run today. Incidentally only a few houses down the one where Saajan Fernandes’s house was located in The Lunchbox. Such an ominous yet celebratory confluence of life and art. My heart felt compliments to the artist @bollywoodartproject and a million thoughts and loving prayers for this immortal soul. All that came to the mind was, who knew…#IrrfanForever.”
The Lunchbox, directed by Ritesh Batra, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 2013. It won Critics Week Viewers Choice Award at the festival. The film was released in India in September, 2013. It was a major box office hit and was loved by the audience and the critics alike.
Earlier, in an exclusive conversation with India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai, Nimrat Kaur recalled her memories of shooting The Lunchbox with Irrfan. She said, “We just met a few times on the set of The Lunchbox, we didn’t share a scene together in the film. But we would travel together to promote the film. So, my interaction with him was on a personal level. He had a tremendous sense of humour and a great realisation of life. He would come up with some unexpected comments on situations. I remember when The Lunchbox premiered in Cannes, I was really nervous. He just laughed and said ‘hold on to this time, this is the reward we get for all the hard work.'”
The Lunchbox is the story of a lonely wife who prepares special dishes to woo her husband. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the lunchbox is delivered to a wrong address and reaches Irrfan, instead of Nimrat’s husband. Irrfan, a widower, is too a loner too. Nimrat and Irrfan start exchanging letters, thus starting a delightful romance.
