There might be a global pause on flying right now, but the pandemic hasn’t put an end to the search for the world’s best airport.

And this year’s honour has gone to a frequent winner – Singapore’s Changi Airport.

For the eighth year, the transport hub has won top place in the annual Skytrax World Airport Awards.

Tokyo Haneda Airport came second and Doha’s Hamad International Airport came third on the 2020 rankings.

The awards, which were based on results of a global airport satisfaction survey, were due to he held in Paris in April but the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

They were announced in a live stream on YouTube instead.

“Having deferred the award announcements for nearly six weeks, we felt it was now right to try and bring some cheer into the airport industry in these difficult times,” Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said, according to CNN.

Changi Airport’s win comes despite it having recorded a 70 per cent drop in passenger traffic in March as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The airport had about 1.65 million passengers in March, compared to 5.63 at the same time in 2019, the Strait Times reported.

Earlier this month the airport shut down Terminal 2 — for the first time in 30 years — for 18 months due to plummeting air traffic.

“Changi Airport is humbled to receive this affirmation from our travellers, made possible by the strong support from our airport partners,” the airport’s CEO Lee Seow Hiang said in a video statement during the awards broadcast.

“This has been a challenging year for all of us. Like everyone else, here at Changi, we continue to do our best to safeguard and protect the health of our travellers, our visitors and our airport workers.

“We wish everyone in the international aviation community well. Let’s look forward to better times and soon.”

Last year Changi unveiled its $1.78 billion Jewel development featuring the world’s biggest indoor waterfall, a Pokemon centre, your very own hot chip cafe called Potato Corner and a 130-room hotel, all under the one roof.

Elsewhere in the awards, Melbourne Airport took out Best Airport in Australia/Pacific and Adelaide Airport claimed top prize in the Best Regional Airport in Australia/Pacific category.

The award for World’s Cleanest Airport went to Tokyo Haneda Airport, Best Airport Dining to fellow Tokyo hub Narita International Airport, and Best Airport Shopping went to London Heathrow.
