South Africa all-rounder and former Chennai Super Kings player Albie Morkel said the 28-run over in CSK’s win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 had a massive impact on his career and the team.

Albie Morkel, who smashed 28 runs off Virat Kohli’s 19th over, said he wondered why RCB bowled the India star at the crucial juncture but told himself that he could take the team close to the total if he connected a few.

CSK were chasing a massive total of 206 after Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli hit fifties for RCB at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. CSK were in a spot of bother as they lost MS Dhoni who was striking at more than 170 for 41 from 24 balls.

CSK needed 43 off the last 2 overs when the then RCB captain Daniel Vettori handed over the ball to Virat Kohli.

Ablie Morkel took Virat Kohli to the cleaners, hitting 3 sixes and 2 boundaries in an over that cost 28 runs. CSK went on to win the match after successfully getting 15 runs in Vinay Kumar’s final over.

‘Was a special match to be part of’

Recalling the victory at Chepauk, Albie Morkel said CSK always found ways to win matches from improbable situations, especially against RCB.

“Look, that’s one of those evenings… once again we were out of the game. RCB had the game in their bag… I had no idea why they bowled Virat. All respect to him, he shouldn’t have bowled that over anyway. We lost a wicket in the last ball of the 18th over,” Abie Morkel told sports presenter Rupha Ramani in a YouTube chat for Chennai Super Kings.

“The 19th and 20 were left. We needed 42 (43) off 2. I walked in at No. 7. You look at the scoreboard and you’re like ‘oh no, 40-odd off 2, that’s impossible’.

“You walk in and then you see Virat’s bowling then I thought ‘if I can connect a few, maybe we can get close’.

“I think I edged the 1st one for 4 that just missed my stumps. I edge another one just went over the short third man. I started hitting it straight and we eventually got 28 and ended up winning the match with Bravo hitting a couple in the next over.

“We somehow find ways to beat them like that. We will be out of the game completely and come from nowhere to beat them. It’s a very special game to be part of.

“Once again a small moment in the game that made a massive impact on the team and my career. I think if I look at most of the comments from Chennai fans on social media, they refer back to that moment.

“That moment lasted about 15 minutes in my career. It is magical to look back at. I remember the vibe at the ground.”

Albie Morkel on MS Dhoni’s Dharamsala special

Meanwhile, Albie Morkel also recalled his partnership with MS Dhoni in the do-or-die match against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2010.

Chasing 193, CSK needed 16 runs off the final over for a place in the semi-final. MS Dhoni finished it off in style, hitting 2 big sixes against Irfan Pathan who bowled the final over for Kings XI Punjab.

Morkel was having the best seat at the stadium as he watched MS Dhoni hit a match-winning 29-ball 54 from the non-striker’s end.

“RCB played the afternoon game. If they had won the game, we would have been out of it,” Albie Morkel said.

“Myself and MS [Dhoni] got together, got a partnership going, got a few boundaries going. It was quite a big total. I remember… Irfan Pathan was bowling the last over. I remember MS hit the second-last ball out of the stadium and we won the game. We went into the finals and we won that year.

“To play with a guy like MS not only his leadership, the way he approaches when he plays, it’s well documented, how calm he stays. That’s what I learnt by batting with him. Most of the way I sort of played later in my career is play as calmly as possible.”
