ED searches premises of Vadra’s associates; Cong claims vendetta

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out searches at the premises of three people linked to firms of Robert Vadra, son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, in connection with alleged commissions received by some suspects in defence deals, officials said.

The searches, carried out in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru, were also related to cases of assets held abroad, they said.

“The searches at the premises of the three people linked to firms of Vadra were related to alleged commissions received by some suspects in defence deals,” an ED official said.

Reacting to the developments, the Congress said the raids show the nervousness within the BJP camp after sensing defeat in the five States where Assembly polls concluded today. The party urged the Centre to stop using investigating agencies for settling political scores.

The Congress’ media in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is acting like a don lording over a criminal empire to persecute and hound everyone opposed to him.

“Sure shot defeat in five States has unnerved Modi to again use the same old trick – unleash revenge and vendetta against Robert Vadra to divert the narrative. Instead of acting as independent investigative agencies, CBI, ED and Income Tax are acting as personal slaves and political agents of Modi,” he tweeted.

He said the Modi government has let loose a criminal conspiracy to vilify, denigrate and malign Vadra to settle political scores. “In a brazen affront to the rule of law and to Constitution, on the polling day, officers of ED from Jaipur and Delhi raided the office of Vadra at Sukhdev Vihar, New Delhi, as also the residence of his associate, his sister and her in-laws at Noida, without any FIR or search warrant,” the party alleged.

Surjewala said Vadra’s lawyer had stated that all this was done without the registration of an offence or FIR against him.

“Congress fought the British and decimated them to win Independence for India. We also faced every other challenge from across the border and never bowed down. A despotic Prime Minister and a government mired in crime can never deter the Congress or the people of this country from speaking truth to the power,” he claimed.
