Opposition Congress and BJP on Thursday began campaign yatras in protest against the Kerala government’s stand on the entry of women of reproductive age into Sabarimala temple.

BJP Kerala president P S Sreedharan Pillai was Thursday booked by the police for his speech in connection with Sabarimala protests on a day when the saffron party launched its yatra for “protecting” the temple’s traditions and rituals.

The case was registered in Kozhikode on a complaint by journalist Shybin alleging that Pillai had instigated activists to protest over entry of women of menstrual age into the hill shrine recently, police said.

Reacting to the case, Pillai accused the CPI(M) and Congress of “witch hunting” and trying to “tarnish” his image.

While BJP launched a rath yatra from Kasaragod that would culminate at the Sabarimala base station on November 13, the Congress also kicked off multiple vehicle processions.

Karnataka BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa who flagged the BJP’s rath yatra, led by the party’s state president P S Sreedharan Pillai, said it would mark the end of the CPI(M) regime led by Pinarayi Vijayan. He said the CPI(M) government was working to destroy Hindu traditions.

Congress state working president K Sudhakaran launched the party’s yatra from Kasaragod to Pathnamthitta, led by its state unit working president K Sudhakaran against the “politicisation” of the Sabarimala issue by the CPI(M) and BJP.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan took a dig at the two parties. “Wait to see where both yatras would become one. When BJP state president said the Congress would perish in Kerala, none from the Congress reacted against it. It shows the collapse of Congress. On Sabarimala issue, Congress leaders say national president Rahul Gandhi’s stand is personal. They are with BJP president Amit Shah on Sabarimala issue,’’ he said.

He said the Left Democratic Front government was with the believers. However, it would not tolerate any attempts to create trouble. — With PTI inputs
