Record Rainfall
From midnight Sunday to 7 AM Monday, heavy rains lashed across Mumbai, recording over 300 mm of rainfall. Govandi received 315 mm, and Powai recorded 314 mm.
Impact on Commuters
The rains disrupted Central Railway suburban services. With tracks submerged, local train operations were halted. Around 3 million people rely on suburban local train services daily in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.
Low-Lying Areas Flooded
Several low-lying areas in Mumbai were flooded. Knee-deep water on many roads caused motorists difficulties, and traffic jams were reported in several places.
Schools and Colleges Closed
Authorities announced holidays for schools and colleges. NDRF personnel have undertaken rescue operations. The meteorological department also predicts heavy to hefty rains in Mumbai on Monday.
Orange Alert Issued
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan belt. In Shapur, Thane, NDRF personnel safely rescued 49 people trapped in a resort surrounded by floodwater. In Palghar district, firefighters and NDRF teams rescued 16 villagers trapped in floods while working in the fields.
Heavy rains have caused significant disruption in Mumbai. Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, stay safe, and follow the issued guidelines.
